Dr. Melissa Beth Mitchell

Dr. Melissa Beth Mitchell is a Philosopher by trade who has spent over ten years teaching and coaching students during office hours. She has her BA and MA in Philosophy and PhD in Higher Education and focuses on three vital areas:
Philosophy

  • As Instructor In her time teachingIntroduction to Philosophy, her students have crafted individual philosophy of life papers centered around their beliefs, values, character strengths, and desired legacy.

Critical Thinking

  • Her time teaching Critical Thinking and Composition has helped students (a) identify rhetorical devices and fallacies and not fall for them, and (b) analyze current, controversial moral and legal issues from diverse, credible sources.

Self-authorship

  • Dr. Mitchell developed a new definition of student success as maximizing cognitive, psychological, and spiritual outcomes for purposes of self-authorship. Self-authorship entails have an internalized sense of meaning and purpose that is not given by authorities. If she can help students achieve self-authorship, then they will be guided to make informed decisions about career, lifelong partner, and beliefs and values.

Over the years, Dr. Mitchell has taught at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), Mount Saint Mary's University, New York Film Academy, and Los Angeles Pierce College. She is an Alum of LMU, where she studied Philosophy, and a certified life coach through a separate program at this institution.
